What type of drug is Zithromax Z-pak?
Zithromax Z-pak is a macrolide antibiotic which is an effective treatment for many bacterial infections.
What is this drug used for?
Zithromax Z-pak contains azithromycin. This ingredient can treat ear infections, skin infections, respiratory infections and STDs (sexually transmitted diseases). A doctor may use Zithromax Z-pak for other health problems.
What is the recommended dosage?
Always use Zithromax Z-Pak as instructed by your doctor. This medication is available in oral tablets, oral capsules and an oral suspension. Swallow the tablets and capsules with water. The capsules must be taken on an empty stomach 1-2 hours before eating. The tablets and oral suspension can be taken with or without food. If you are using the oral suspension, use a measuring device to make sure the correct dose is used.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a scheduled dose, you can take it when you remember. But do not take your missed dose if your next scheduled dose is due soon. Rather ignore your missed dose. Do not ever double up a dose.
Precautions and other information
When using Zithromax Z-pak it is advisable not to drink alcohol. This medication is known to cause vision problems, light-headedness, drowsiness and dizziness which can be more severe if alcohol is consumed.
When you first take this drug, dont drive or do any hazardous activity in case this drug reacts badly. If any of the above symptoms do not disappear after a couple of weeks, tell your doctor.
Do not let anyone else use your medication. And do not take more or less of this medication unless your doctor has told you to.
If you are allergic to azithromycin or any other macrolide antibiotic, do not take Zithromax Z-pak.
Before taking Zithromax Z-pak tell your doctor if you have ever suffered with kidney or liver disease, irregular heart rate, myasthenia gravis, or if you have a history of Long QT syndrome.
Zithromax Z-pak is not likely to harm unborn babies. However, before using this drug tell your doctor if you are pregnant or if you are planning a pregnancy. If you are breast-feeding, tell your doctor because it is not known if this drug can pass into breast milk.
If you use antacids, they should be taken 2 hours after, or 2 hours before, your dose of Zithromax Z-pak. Antacids can reduce the efficacy of Zithromax Z-pak.
Antibiotics such as Zithromax Z-pak can cause diarrhea in some patients. If you get persistent diarrhea that contains blood, tell your doctor. This symptom may a result of a new infection.
While using Zithromax Z-pak, do not go outdoors unless you have used sunscreen. This medication may make your skin more sensitive to UV rays. Wear a hat and wear clothes that cover your legs and arms. Do not use sunlamps while taking this medication.
Does Zithromax Z-pak cause any side effects?
If you suddenly break out in hives, or find it difficult to breathe and your face, tongue, throat or lips swell, this could be a sign of an allergic reaction to this medication. Contact your doctor right away.
Symptoms of other serious side effects are irregular heart rate, chest pain, stomach pain, nausea, loss of appetite, straw colored stools, dark urine, jaundice, sore throat, fever, or a headache with skin rash and blistering.
Minor side effects are mild diarrhea, mild nausea, constipation, upset stomach, headache, tiredness, dizziness, feeling nervous, insomnia, mild skin rash or itching, vaginal discharge or itching, ringing in the ears, or a decrease in the senses of smell and taste.
